We all might have struggled in reading clock as a child. Now digital clocks have made clock reading very easier and accurate. Still, knowing to read an analog clock is important thing to learn. In this article we will learn to read an analog clock.
Before starting to learn, we all must know the difference between analog and digital clock. We all have been using analog clocks, nowadays digital clocks are very popular yet at homes we still prefer to analog clocks.
Analog clocks have hands to show time. Analog clocks generally have two or three hands of second, hour and minute. Many analog clocks have only two hands to show hour and minute and time into an analog clock does not consist much accuracy. Analog clocks show approximate time. Whereas digital clocks show the minutes, seconds and hours with accuracy as digital clocks show numeric display which indicates time. Both the clocks have different mechanics to run upon. We would not go technically.
Here, now we are going to learn that how can we read time in analog watches and along with it, we will keep learning to read time in digital watches. Before that let we all know that big hand of the clock indicates minutes of the hour and little hand of the clock indicates hour of the day.
1. When big hand is pointing to 12

In an analog clock, when big hand of the clock is pointing to 12 and the little hand is pointing to any number, then it is complete hour of the day. Let’s understand it more precisely with the above picture of clock. In the clock, big hand is pointing to 12 and small hand is pointing to 4 then the time is 4 o’clock. In digital clock it will be read 6:00.

2. When big hand is pointing to 3

In an analog clock, when big hand of the clock is pointing to 3 and the little hand is little far from the number, it simply means it has past the quarter time of the hour as we have four quarters in an hour. Let’s understand it more precisely with the above picture of clock. In the clock, big hand is pointing to 3 and small hand is a bit far from 4 then time is quarter past 4. In digital clock it will be read 4:15.

3. When big hand is pointing to 6

In an analog clock, when big hand of the clock is pointing to 6 and the little hand is between two numbers then the time will be the half past of the first number between two numbers. Let’s understand this more precisely with the above picture of clock. In the clock, big hand is pointing to 6 and little hand is pointing between 4 and 5, it means the time is 30 minutes have been past of an hour, so we will read it that time is half past 6. In digital clock it will be read 4:30.

4. When big hand is pointing to 9

In an analog clock, when big hand is pointing to 9 and the little hand is a bit before far from the number and just about to reach to the number, it means a single quarter is remained to complete an hour. Let’s understand this with help of above picture of clock. In the clock, big hand is pointing to 9 and little hand is pointing between 4 and 3 so the time is quarter to 4. In digital clock it will be read 3:45.

5. When big hand is not pointing to quarters or halves

As we all know that we have 4 quarters in an hour. But this is the situation when big hand is pointing to neither quarters nor halves. Then in such situation we will consider the time we have remaining to complete an hour. Let’s understand this more precisely with the help of above picture. In the clock, the big hand is pointing to 7 and little hand is between 3 and 4, it means 25 minutes are remaining to 4 o’clock. So, the time is 25 to 4. In digital clock it will be read 3:35.

6. When big hand is not pointing to quarters or halves

As we all know that we have 4 quarters in an hour. But this is the situation when big hand is pointing to neither quarters nor halves. Then in such situation we will consider the time which has become past. Let’s understand this more precisely with the help of above picture. In the clock, the big hand is pointing to 11 and little hand is about to point 4 so, the time is 55 past 4. In digital clock it will be read 3:55.

AM and PM

Generally, many of people stay confused when they apply AM (Ante Meridiem) Before noon or PM (Post Meridiem) After Noon. Let’s learn the basics to apply AM or PM.

24 hours of a day is divided into 12- hour system. So now we have two periods of 12-hour system. The first 12-hour period starts from midnight to noon or before noon designates AM. Whereas the second 12-hour period starts from noon to midnight or after noon designate PM.

So, in this article we learnt about reading the time in analog and digital clocks. Hopefully, this article will help you.
